The clock is ticking for our planet, but the power to make a difference lies in your hands – and starts right here, in your everyday life. Welcome to Countdown Earth, your new blog for practical advice on all things sustainability. In this series, I want to show you how you can reduce your ecological footprint with simple changes in your everyday life and thus make a valuable contribution to protecting our planet. In this first episode, we'll focus on the topic of conscious nutrition. It's often the sum of many small steps that ultimately achieves the greatest impact. Together, we can make a positive difference.

The power of small steps: Understanding your carbon footprint through diet
Before we dive into specific tips, it's helpful to understand how your diet contributes to your carbon footprint. Essentially, this term describes the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by your daily activities, and the production of our food plays a significant role in this. From farming and transportation to processing and storage, all of these steps influence the environmental impact of our meals.
Why is it so important to reduce this part of your footprint? Higher greenhouse gas emissions have a direct impact on global warming. This accelerates climate change and can have catastrophic effects on our planet. But the good news is: Each and every one of us can help in the fight against global warming by making climate-friendly choices in our everyday lives, especially in our diets. Over the coming weeks, this series will explore different aspects of how we can do just that—step by step toward lowering our own carbon footprints. Today, we'll start with the topic of nutrition.
Simple successes: straightforward tips for a lower-carbon diet
A significant portion of your carbon footprint is caused by your eating habits. There are many ways to make a big impact with small changes.
Rethinking nutrition: The power of plants

Reducing meat consumption, especially beef, has a significant impact on CO₂ emissions. Beef production, for example, produces many times more greenhouse gases than the production of plant-based protein sources such as lentils. Cattle farming also produces significant amounts of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. A vegetarian diet can significantly reduce annual CO₂ emissions. According to the WWF, a vegetarian diet could save 98 million tons of CO₂ in Germany. A vegan diet would lead to even greater savings.
Prefer regional and seasonal products
Prioritize produce from your region and in season. This reduces emissions caused by long transport routes and supports the local economy. Vegetables from heated greenhouses can have a significantly higher carbon footprint than those grown outdoors. Pay attention to seasonal calendars to choose the best and most environmentally friendly options.
Reduce food waste
Plan your meals, create shopping lists, and store food properly to avoid waste. The production and disposal of food that is never eaten causes unnecessary emissions. In Germany, around 11 million tons of food end up in the trash every year. Buy only what you really need.
Shopping without packaging
Try to shop without packaging to avoid plastic waste. Use reusable containers and bags for fruits, vegetables, and other loose items.
The big picture: Effective measures in everyday life
In addition to the direct decisions you make when shopping and preparing your meals, there are also overarching aspects that can make your diet more sustainable.
Choose organic products
Buy organic foods whenever possible. These are grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which has a positive impact on the environment and biodiversity.
Use legumes as a source of protein
Incorporate more plant-based protein sources such as legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas) into your diet. They have a smaller ecological footprint than animal products and are rich in nutrients. Furthermore, legumes can absorb nitrogen from the soil, thus contributing to soil improvement.
Food for thought: The carbon price of your decisions compared
To better illustrate the impact of different diets on your carbon footprint, let's look at some examples in direct comparison:
Diet | Approximate annual CO₂ emissions |
---|---|
Meat eaters (average) | 1730 kg |
Vegetarians (average) | 1280 kg |
Vegans (average) | 1040 kg |
Savings through vegetarian diet (WWF) | 98 million tons of CO₂ (for Germany) |
Savings through vegan diet (WWF) | 102 million tons of CO₂ (for Germany) |
Note: The values in this table are averages and may vary depending on the source and specific circumstances.
These figures demonstrate that your dietary choices have a significant impact on your CO₂ emissions.
